Studio Classes

Joanne regularly teaches classes on an individual basis in her studio. Classes are also available for small groups. You can plan to come for one day or up to a week. See below for costs and current open studio dates.

After teaching as a professor of Design and Weaving at the University of Montana and Cal Poly in California, Joanne decided to open her studio in Montana to weave tapestries and teach classes. She has been teaching weaving throughout the US and Canada since 1972.

Joanne’s expertise with countermarch and counterbalance looms bring many weavers to her classes. The studio has a variety of new looms, mostly Glimakra Swedish counterbalance and countermarch looms and equipment, including two Swedish drawlooms. The studio is fully equipped with warping reels, shuttles and temples for you to use. Bockens and Borgs Swedish linen, cottolin, cotton and Swedish wool yarns are available.

Weaving looms, weaving accessories and yarns are available for purchase.

A List of Class Descriptions to Guide You

CALENDAR OF CLASSES
Beginning Weaving
Using a variety of types of looms, you will learn the basics of weaving. Some looms will be prepared and ready for you to weave. Planning projects and warping the loom can be a part of the class. We will start at the level you are at, as this class is designed to fit your weaving skill level.

Introduction to Countermarch Looms
Using a countermarch floor loom, you will learn to weave on, warp and tie up a countermarch loom. You will learn why they are such nice looms. The class can be tailored to your skill level.

Drawloom Weaving
Weaving on a drawloom is a lot of fun. Learn to weave your name or any pattern you can put onto graph paper. Two different types of drawlooms are set up for learning to weave, both damask and pattern weaving. Plan on three days. Longer workshops can include warping the drawloom.

Beginning Tapestry Weaving
Learn tapestry weaving on a frame loom or a floor loom. Basic techniques will be woven in a sampler. If you are not a beginner, the class can be designed to fit your skill level.

Swedish Rag Rug Weaving
Rag rugs woven in Sweden have some distinctive characteristics. There are some beautiful designs woven in plain weave as well as some woven with threaded patterns. Usually there is a loom ready for you to weave a full sized rug, or you can weave samples and learn several different techniques.

Scandinavian Weaves
There are both drall weaves commonly used for linens and fabrics, as well as the art weaves used for decorative pieces. Some looms may already be set up before you come. You can suggest some weaves that you are interested in. Many can be woven on four shafts, but you can also select a weave which requires more than four.

Class Costs

$90.00 per day for a six hour studio class, including lunch and use of the equipment. For more information on these classes, contact Joanne by email or toll free: 866-890-7314.
